Crew lists at TNA - index to BT 99
This page is an index to the BT 99 series of records at The National Archives (TNA), which contains the
10% random sample of crew lists and agreements which TNA retained for the period 1861 to 1939.
The CLIP index covers the period from 1861 to 1923.
The records are stored in 3700+ boxes ("pieces") each holding fifty or more crew lists,
so to find the records for a particular vessel, you need to know the reference number for that piece
(something like BT 99/1600). There is a paper index at TNA in loose-leaf volumes, which we have
transferred to make this index.
The paper index was compiled by a team of staff at The National Archives led by Bruno Pappalardo.
We are glad to acknowledge their work and record our thanks for permission to publish the data in
this format. Our thanks also go to Chris Watts and his colleagues for their assistance with this project.
The index finds the reference number(s) from the vessel's official number - just enter it
in the box below and click 'Search'. The results will be shown below.
Below the table, there is a link to the TNA catalogue entry for this official number. The TNA catalogue shows
the relevant pieces with a list of the crew lists that are included in each. Click on the one you want and the
next page has a button (Request this) which will enable you to order copies of the documents on-line.
